Hadaeq El-Qubba Square Transforms into a Captivating Landmark as Tree-Planting Campaigns Flourish in Al-Azhar Institutes under the Patronage of the Grand Imam
In a scene reflecting an unprecedented environmental and cultural transformation, Cairo is donning a new, vibrant green face through pioneering initiatives led by civil society organizations, with support from the Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP). While the enchanting purple blooms of Jacaranda trees now adorn Hadaeq El-Qubba Square, captivating the eyes and refreshing the spirit, environmental initiatives are extending their roots into schools, Al-Azhar institutes, and libraries — together forming a cultural movement toward a more sustainable and beautiful future.
From the heart of the capital, specifically in Hadaeq El-Qubba Square, the Plant a Tree for Social Development Foundation launched its ambitious project “Green Squares” — a first step toward transforming Cairo’s public squares into vibrant ecological icons. The project presents a comprehensive model for revitalizing urban spaces through tree planting, focusing on the Jacaranda tree for its aesthetic and environmental benefits. The square was chosen as the launch site due to its historical and geographical significance, located near the Presidential Palace and considered one of the city’s most prominent landmarks.
With hundreds of Jacaranda trees planted — providing not only visual beauty but also cleaner air and improved microclimates — the square has become a symbol of harmony between environment and urban development. According to Nabil Mahrous, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, “The Green Squares project is not just about planting trees; it’s about strengthening urban ecosystem resilience and promoting a ‘green city’ culture across communities.” He added that plans are underway to expand the initiative to other districts, focusing on tree species that effectively filter air and resist pollution — reflecting a deep understanding of afforestation’s role in combating climate change.
In parallel, the Youth of Egypt for Development and Environment Association continues to implement its flagship project “Green Cairo”, aiming to expand green spaces within educational and cultural institutions. The Misr Public Library in Zeitoun witnessed remarkable activity under this project, where 250 square meters of green lawns and ten fruit trees were planted with the participation of local youth and members of the Agricultural Syndicate — creating a vivid example of community engagement and the power of small, sustainable steps.
Recognizing that environmental values must be instilled from early education, the association also launched a new tree-planting campaign under the patronage of His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, covering several Al-Azhar institutes. The campaign began at Al-Bashir Primary and Preparatory Institute in El-Zawya El-Hamra, where schoolyards were transformed into small green gardens, nurturing a sense of belonging and environmental responsibility among students.
Together, the “Green Squares” and “Green Cairo” initiatives embody the essence of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities, and Goal 13 on climate action. This synergy between funding agencies and civil society organizations reflects a collective will to place the environment at the heart of urban development and to make beauty an essential part of citizens’ daily lives.
