Alliance for Sustainability: Alexandria University and “Our Earth’s Climate” Lead a Model for Low-Carbon Education

In a significant step toward integrating sustainability into the educational process and promoting climate action within university campuses, the “Our Earth’s Climate for Sustainable Development Foundation” signed a cooperation agreement with Alexandria University as part of the project “Green Universities for a Better Future”, funded by the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP).

The agreement, signed at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University, aims to transform the faculty into a model “Green College”, by reducing its carbon footprint, integrating green economy and environmental entrepreneurship concepts into academic programs, and enhancing student participation in sustainability activities and initiatives. This partnership between civil society and academic institutions stands as one of the most interactive models driving the shift toward sustainable, low-emission education.

As a practical start to the project, Our Earth’s Climate Foundation organized its first awareness workshop at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Alexandria University, as well as faculty members and students. During the workshop, the results of a carbon footprint assessment of the Faculty of Pharmacy—conducted by a specialized consultancy—were presented. The findings will serve as a scientific database to help determine intervention priorities and future action plans.

The workshop also explored opportunities for integrating green curricula into higher education, and discussed ways to empower university youth to confront the climate crisis through innovative solutions and student-led community initiatives. Additionally, participants reviewed successful international experiences in developing green campuses, offering valuable insights to inspire local action with a global perspective.
