Small Grants Programme Supports the Transition to Solar Energy in Industry and Communities
As part of its ongoing efforts to combat climate change and support the transition toward a green economy, the Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP) continues to fund and implement a series of pioneering initiatives promoting the shift to renewable energy — particularly in the industrial sector, local communities, and protected natural areas — in partnership with civil society organizations and relevant government authorities.
Local Factories in Giza Turn to Solar Energy
In Giza Governorate, the “Sawa Ala El Ganna Association for Development and Special Needs Care” continues to implement its project, “Using Solar Energy in Industry to Combat Climate Change.”
Two solar power stations, with capacities of 5 kW and 10 kW, were installed in two factories — one producing cardboard and another producing dairy products. These installations have successfully reduced electricity consumption and lowered carbon emissions.
A programme field team, led by Ghada Ahmedin, Assistant National Coordinator of the Small Grants Programme, visited the project sites in Oseem City and held a coordination meeting with the city’s mayor to develop a plan for expanding solar energy stations and forming a local support committee.
This reflects a strong local commitment to promoting sustainable industry within Egypt’s popular urban areas.
Youth at the Heart of the Green Transition in Cairo and Alexandria
In an inspiring experience, the Forum for Dialogue and Participation for Development Foundation continues implementing its project, “Sustainable Local Youth Communities,” in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The initiative has equipped the Youth Development Center in El-Sahel (Cairo) and the Marine Youth Center in Anfoushi (Alexandria) with solar power systems totaling 9.44 kW, along with solar-powered mobile charging units.
Additionally, energy-efficient LED lighting is being installed in both centers — a move designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and raise youth awareness about the importance of renewable energy.
Similarly, the Egyptian Leaders Foundation for Development completed the installation of solar water heaters on the rooftop of the recreational swimming pool changing rooms at the Gezira Youth Center, as part of the “Eco-Friendly Youth Centers” project.
The initiative, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and funded by the Small Grants Programme, aims to transform youth centers into inspiring models of sustainability and efficient resource use.
Eco-Tourism Joins the Clean Energy Drive
In the Dabbabiya Protected Area in Luxor Governorate, the Abu Bakr Community Development Association in Tod launched a project to install a 5 kW solar power station as part of the “Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Reserve Management” project.
This initiative marks a step toward transforming the reserve into a comprehensive model for sustainable eco-tourism, providing clean, renewable energy from the heart of nature.
A Comprehensive Shift Toward Sustainability
These projects collectively represent an integrated model for Egypt’s transition to renewable energy — not only reducing emissions but also empowering communities, lowering costs, and improving quality of life in alignment with the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.
Officials from the Small Grants Programme affirm that support will continue to strengthen the use of solar energy across industry, community development, and tourism, paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive environmental future.
