Clean Energy Opens New Horizons for Sustainable Development in Egypt The Small Grants Program Supports Solar Energy Transition Projects in Industry and Communities
As part of its ongoing efforts to combat climate change and support the shift toward a green economy, the Small Grants Program (GEF/SGP) continues to fund and implement a series of pioneering initiatives focused on transitioning to renewable energy—particularly in industrial sectors, local communities, and protected natural areas—in partnership with civil society organizations and relevant executive bodies.
Local Factories Go Solar in Giza In Giza Governorate, the “Together to Paradise for Development and Special Needs Care” Association has been implementing the project “Using Solar Energy in Industry to Combat Climate Change.” Two solar power stations with capacities of 5 and 10 kilowatts were installed at a cardboard factory and a dairy products facility, helping reduce electricity consumption and lower carbon emissions.
The program team, led by Ghada Ahmedin, Assistant National Director of the Small Grants Program, visited the implementation sites in Osim city. A coordination meeting was held with the city’s mayor to develop an expansion plan for solar stations and form a support committee for the project—reflecting strong local commitment to promoting sustainable industry in underserved areas.
Youth at the Heart of the Green Transition in Cairo and Alexandria In an inspiring initiative, the “Forum for Dialogue and Participation for Development” Foundation continued its activities under the “Sustainable Local Youth Communities” project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Solar power stations with a capacity of 9.44 kilowatts were installed at the Youth Development Center in El-Sahel (Cairo) and the Marine Youth Center in Anfoushi (Alexandria), along with solar-powered mobile charging units. Energy-saving LED lamps were also installed in youth centers to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and raise youth awareness about the importance of renewable energy.
Additionally, the “Egyptian Leadership Foundation for Development” completed the installation of solar water heaters above the changing rooms at the recreational swimming pool in Gezira Youth Center. This was part of the “Eco-Friendly Youth Centers” project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and funded by the Small Grants Program. The project aims to transform youth centers into inspiring models of sustainability and resource efficiency.
Eco-Tourism Joins the Clean Energy Movement In the Dabbabiya Reserve in Luxor Governorate, the Abu Bakr Community Development Association in Al-Toud launched a project to install a 5-kilowatt solar power station as part of the “Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Reserve Management” initiative. This paves the way for transforming the reserve into a fully integrated model of sustainable eco-tourism, providing clean energy from the heart of nature.
A Comprehensive Shift Toward Sustainability These projects represent a holistic model for transitioning to renewable energy in Egypt. The benefits go beyond reducing emissions—they empower communities, lower costs, and improve quality of life, aligning with the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.
Program leaders affirm that support will continue to expand solar energy applications in industry, communities, and tourism—building toward a more inclusive and sustainable environmental future.
